At Twickel Dental in Much Wenlock, we are pleased to welcome children of all ages. From toddlers to teenagers, we provide dental examinations, preventive care, treatment where needed, and gentle support to help young patients build healthy habits from an early age.

As clinicians, and as parents ourselves, we understand the realities of family life. Children will naturally enjoy treats along the way, and our role is not to expect perfection, but to help families find a healthy and sustainable balance.

We believe that good oral health begins with simple habits, clear guidance and regular support. By working together with parents and children, we aim to make dental care feel positive, reassuring and part of everyday wellbeing.

Our focus is always on helping each child grow with a healthy smile, good habits and confidence in their oral health for the years ahead.

Visiting the dentist can feel daunting, especially for a young child — and sometimes for adults too. Our team works hard to make each visit feel calm, positive and reassuring, so that children can grow up feeling comfortable with dental care rather than fearful of it. Early experiences matter, and a supportive introduction to dentistry can help shape healthy habits and confidence for years to come.

We often meet adult patients who remain nervous because of a difficult experience in childhood, or because dental anxiety was passed on within the family. Over time, that kind of fear can lead to delayed attendance, more complex problems and, in some cases, avoidable pain or tooth loss.

At Twickel Dental, we believe that a gentle and thoughtful approach makes a real difference. As a family-orientated dental practice in Much Wenlock, and with all of our clinicians being parents themselves, we understand how important it is for children to feel safe, welcomed and at ease. We aim to care for every patient with warmth, patience and respect, offering a full range of dental care for children in a calm, supportive and welcoming setting, including:

It is recommended that your child should visit a dentist by age 1 or within 6 months after their first tooth appears (which is usually around 6 months old). Even though baby teeth will be eventually replaced with the permanent adult teeth, it is very important to keep an eye on their development, as healthy baby teeth are fundamental to a Childs overall health & development.

As part of our oral health education, we can show you how to care for your young children's teeth as they come in, and also help with advice on teething & thumb sucking.

Brushing (twice a day) & flossing (once a day) will always be the best way in preventative care, to reduce tooth decay and cavities. We recommend dental sealants for children when their first molars come in (which is usually around the age of 6) and again when the second set come in (usually around the age of 12). Molars are our back teeth that are used to chew & crush food. They have uneven, deep grooves which can make it hard to clean, especially for children.

Sealants are a thin protective coating that can be applied over the chewing surface of molars. They will help keep food out of the grooves and help decrease the risk of tooth decay. It only takes minutes to apply the sealants and is a completely painless procedure.

Fluoride plays an important role in helping to prevent tooth decay in children, as it helps make your children teeth more resistant to acid and corrosion. As part of your children's regular cleaning, we will use concentrated fluoride to help strengthen & protect their teeth.

With tooth decay, it can be sometimes hard to spot with just a visual exam, especially if it occurs between teeth. Taking periodic x-rays of your children's teeth will help us to detect problems such as tooth decay and cavities (in the early stages), as well as help us to monitor the development of permanent teeth & wisdom teeth.
